Bishop Ikers reconizies Fr. Turley
" only the beginning of this exciting and inspiring story."

Dear Friends,
As many of you know, the Rev. Dr. Briane Turley, the Rector of Church of the Holy Spirit in Tulsa, received a
Fulbright
Award earlier this year which is enabling him to spend a few weeks this fall in residence at the
University Szeged in Hungary. But that is only the beginning of this exciting and inspiring story.
Fr. Briane
Turley

I was delighted to hear from the church office last week that Fr. Turley was recognized recently by the Mayor of Tulsa for his “extraordinary heroism” in saving the life
of a young man asleep in a burning home near the church. Having noticed the fire, Fr. Turley kicked in the front
door, awakened the occupant, and led him to safety. Wow! What a hero! And what a wonderful Christian example of
what it means to be a good neighbor.
Since taking up his temporary appointment at the
Institute of English and American Studies in Szeged, Fr. Turley has received the University of Szeged’s
highest honor. The Pro-Facultate Philosophiae Medal was conferred on him Sept. 24 in appreciation for work he began
during a previous residency in Szeged, in 2002. Over an eight-year period, Fr. Turley has assisted “in the
development and furtherance of its international relations with universities in the United States.” The medal has
been presented only four times before at Szeged; this is the first time it has been bestowed on a non-European
scholar. The ceremony was held in the University's Great Hall, a historic room where, in 1956, students first met
to organize the Hungarian Revolution. What an honor, indeed.
During his stay this autumn Fr. Turley is teaching an undergraduate course in American Religious History and
leading a seminar in ecumenical relations among the three great streams of Christianity: the Anglican, Roman
Catholic, and Orthodox traditions.

Outside the classroom, he is working with the university's faculty to install Internet technologies that will allow
them to begin team teaching with their peers around the world.

In addition, Fr. Turley has been invited to give a public lecture at the Roman Catholic cathedral, the Dom Ter
(pictured at left). The he will be addressing the bishop and others in holy orders locally. Fr. Turley will speak
on “the complexities of Anglicanism that precipitated the tone of [the] ARCIC
III [ecumenical dialogue] this past May. They ask that this include personal reflections on why I remain
Anglican following the issue of Anglicanorum Coetibus [Ordinariate].” The date of the lecture is still to be
announced.
Fr. Turley's wife, Ann, is about to join him in Szeged, and we wish them both a refreshing few weeks in the
bustling “university town.
” We join the people of Church of the Holy Spirit in congratulating their Rector on his many accomplishments, and
we look forward, with them, to his safe return.
Faithfully in Christ,
The Rt. Rev. Jack Leo Iker
Bishop of Fort Worth
